Old city walls

In 1219 Sancho el Fuerte founded Viana to add it to the defensive line formed by Mendavia, Labraza, Laguardia, San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Salinillas de Buradón.

On the mound of the current town, a walled fence reinforced with towers, a moat and four portals oriented towards the cardinal points was raised: Santa María to the north, Estella to the east, La Solana to the south and San Felices, where the works began, to the west.

A symmetrical urban layout that has survived until nowadays, was developed inside.

In the 16th century, when it lost its defensive function, the moat was filled in and parts of the walls were dismantled, which stone was used later for the construction of buildings.

The stretch that has remained intact is the one at the foot of the church of San Pedro.
