Plaza del Coso

Plaza del Coso was configured within the large urban interventions developed in Viana during the Baroque. On the occasion of annual festivities or extraordinary events, it was often used to hold bullfighting festivities which took place in the in that time Plaza del Castillo. To carry out the festivities, stages and stands were prepared for the occasion, which were later dismantled.

In the 17th century, the land was leveled, the Estella portal was blinded and a large, practically closed space was created, surrounded by houses, converted into stands for shows. There were three buildings specifically set aside for bullfighting balconies: one for the municipal council, another for the ecclesiastical, and another for the nobility.

Finally, in 1685, the exterior of the municipal bullfight balcony building took shape, with an architectural concept similar to that of the town hall. A two-story building, with two towers at either end, with a gallery and views of the arena, from which the authorities had a privileged place to watch the celebration.

Currently, in addition to its primitive function as a bullfighting balcony for the authorities, it is used as the headquarters of the basic social service.
