Church of San Pedro and gardens of Serrat

The church of San Pedro, currently in ruins, was the first church in Viana. Built-in the 13th century, it was conceived with defensive criteria to protect the western flank of the town. Its powerful tower rose taking advantage of the wall and favoring its strategic position.
A side nave, part of its head, the retrochoir, the tower and the baroque access portal remain standing from the original construction.
The church has a floor plan with three naves, the central one being the widest, all of them divided into four sections, and an original pentagonal apse that includes five polygonal chapels arranged radially.
At the foot of the façade, in the southwest corner, emerges a powerful tower with a square plan.
The original building was remodeled during the 16th century with a bell tower on the tower and on the entrances to the adjacent cemetery.
In the 18th century, extensions were made, mistreating its main walls, causing its collapse in 1844.
The church’s old cemetery has been converted into a park with splendid views.
Since 2014 it has been known as the Jardines de Serrat, in honor of the Catalan singer Joan Manuel Serrat, who was named Adoptive Son of the City, due to his involvement with the city since his childhood, which he has maintained until nowadays.
