Cesare Borgia died in the vicinity of Viana, whose remains rest in the portico of the church of Santa María.
Viana, founded by King Sancho VII the Strong in 1219, gained prestige and social importance when Carlos III the Noble instituted the title of Prince of Viana in 1423.
After obtaining the title of city, in 1630, the nobles who settled in the town encouraged the construction of civil and religious buildings, forming the peculiar style of fortified square that has survived to this day.
Cesare Borgia died in the vicinity of Viana and his remains rest in the portico of Santa María, outside the sacred precinct, but in holy land.
